Apple has been known in the industry to support their phones for longest period. They are the king in terms of providing updates and upgrades to their devices for long durations. iPhones have been known to receive updates for more than 7 years. Following this suit, this time Google has announced 7 years of Android upgrades and security fixes. Not only that but also they announced 7 years of AI improvements.
Google has set the bar high for other android manufacturers like Samsung and Oneplus etc. by announcing 7 years of OS upgrades.
This will really have implications forcing other android OEMs and Phone manufacturers to extend their numbers of OS upgrades.
Will other Manufacturers follow the suit?
It might depend on the segment of phones.
The flagships might be promised such extended support but the mid range phones are highly unlikely to see such long duration of upgrades.
Since Apple only sells flagship phones and some a little bit less pricey ones that are still no less than flagships, they promise similar support to their entire hardware range. But Android serves devices in a wider range of segments and it won’t be a lucrative options for the manufacturers to promise long term upgrades to mid-range devices.
